In response to the F-15 and F-16, the Soviet high command set out requirements that resulted in a number of different aircraft. The MiG-29 was developed as a lightweight tactical fighter by the Russian Mikoyan Design Bureau. It was given the name of “Fulcrum” by NATO and continued in use by Russia. The MiG-29 entered service in 1983 and continues today.
